A stroll through the cuisine neighboring NASH

The queso at Moe’s will be not be denied.

Many stressors in a teen’s life come from school — the testing, the homework, the notes, all of it. However, one of the great things about NASH is the number of opportunities to relieve some of those taxing worries.

Having good food and, even better, people to share it with is so much more important than we realize. Lucky enough for us, there are plenty of options just beyond our doorstep. There’s a multitude of cultural food within walking distance, from Mexican to Italian to Chinese to Indian.  We’ve been graced with such a selection that makes the high school experience much more bearable.

Naturally, I have to start with Moe’s. This is a very popular after-school stop, to which you can bring homework to dive into as you stuff your face with chips or just come with friends to try the various sauces. With a great playlist of music and the many quirky paintings on the walls, Moe’s gives such a unique experience along with the tasty treats. However, can I really talk about Moe’s without mentioning the legendary Queso? Moe’s is famous for this chip dip that really completes the experience and leaves everyone wanting more.

Next stop is Rita’s. There’s something about that Italian Ice that makes the trek across the street worth nearly being hit by a car. On a hot day, you will find Rita’s crowded with NA students slurping up their treats in a desperate attempt to cool off.

Speaking of places crowded with NA students, try heading to Monte Cello’s after a football game. Everywhere you turn late on a Friday, it’s as if the restaurant has been overtaken by students decked out in black and gold. Why is Monte Cello’s the hotspot for activity on Fridays, you might ask? Two words for you: Conley Cookie. Aside from their amazing pizza, Monte Cello’s offers this delicious late night snack to feed the masses of NA Tigers practically knocking down the door.

One of my personal favorites is Totin’s Diner. Who doesn’t love the vintage 50’s feel of the nearby diner? As they say themselves, “food is one of life’s great pleasures,” and the cute little restaurant certainly doesn’t disappoint. Totin’s offers hearty meals with a great selection of burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast foods. On top of that, the kindhearted staff will leave you smiling even as you walk out the door.

The last location to discuss– at least for today– is Spice n’ Sabzi. This Indian food market is just around the corner from us. However, despite the fact that it is no more than a six-minute walk, many people don’t consider this a must-have on their list of after-school activities. This, though, is merely a result of miscommunication rather than apathy. Most students don’t realize that Spice n’ Sabzi actually has a section to sit down and eat some of the great foods they serve.

To fully submerse yourself into the North Allegheny Senior High experience, stroll on down to any of these places after school. Grab a group of your friends, and squeeze into a booth best you can. Then, dig in. You will find that you leave with not only a full belly but cheerful vibes as well.
