Highlighting Hollywood’s Biggest Season
January 29, 2019
The nominees are being announced, the lights are flashing, red carpets are rolling out, dresses are being selected, and after parties are being booked — yes, you guessed, it’s award season! Perhaps Hollywood’s busiest time of year, award season is the culminating point of the hard work of actors, musicians, directors, costume designers, producers and artists from the past year.
Fashion critics flock to Hollywood to see who wore it best and who wore it worst. Photographers from around the world hit the sidelines of the carpet in hopes of getting the night’s “best shot”. All the while, nominees prepare acceptance speeches, with dreams of delivering powerful messages whilst no forgetting to thank their moms.
Some of the most prestigious shows of the season include the Golden Globe Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Grammy Awards, and the Oscars.
The 76th Annual Golden Globes kicked off the start of award season Sunday, January 6th, celebrating outstanding achievement in both film and television.. The year’s first award show captivated nearly 18.6 million viewers and was hosted by actors Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh. Samberg stars in the hit TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, while Oh is most known for her role in Grey’s Anatomy. Oh made history in 2018 for becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated for an Emmy in a lead actress category.
Notable movie wins of the night included Bohemian Rhapsody, which took home one of the biggest awards, winning the category of Best Drama. The movie’s lead actor, Rami Malek, also won big, taking home the award for best actor in a drama. However, it was the movie Green Book which took home the most awards of the night, taking home three, including Best Comedy.
In terms of TV, The Kominsky Method won in the category of Best Comedy, while the show’s lead actor, Michael Douglas, won in the Best Actor category.

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards air February 10th on CBS at 8pm.
The 91st Annual Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, will close out award season come February 24th. Perhaps the most highly ranked awards of the season are the Oscars. Nominations for the biggest night in movies were announced on January 22nd. The Favourite and Roma are up for the most awards of the night with ten nominations each. The biggest award of the night, the category of Best Picture, has nominees consisting of The Favourite, Roma, Green Book, Vice, A Star is Born, Blackkklansman, Black Panther, and Bohemian Rhapsody.
The biggest show of the season has not come without controversy over who will perform the hosting duties. Comedian James Corden has hosted the awards for the past two years; however, the Academy decided to elect comedian and actor Kevin Hart to do the duties this year.
Hart was elected for the hosting gig in 2018, but has since been under major fire. After his election last year, years-old homophobic Twitter posts were discovered on Hart’s account. Many criticized him and called for him to step down. Initially refusing to apologize for his past words, Hart later resigned his hosting position and apologized, stating, “I’m sorry that I hurt people. I am evolving and want to continue to do so.” He continued, “I have made the choice to step down from this year’s Oscars.” As of right now, the Academy has yet to announce a new host and has left many to wonder who it will be.
The 91st Annual Academy Awards air February 24th on ABC at 8pm.
