Poem: Hamster Wheel

Hamster Wheel

Slow down!

Take a breath.

I know life is short but

My god! Stop!

Let yourself breathe!

Let me breathe!

You are the one running

And I am the one who’s winded!

How are you doing this?

Or better yet why?

Where are you running to?

Do you even know?

The way I see it,

You’re a hamster on a wheel.

You’re on a track that never ends. You reach no destination.

But if you step off that wheel-

No.

You can’t stop,

You won’t.

I see you laugh, but I don’t see you happy.

Something is constantly plaguing you.

Your brilliance of the mind

Is a curse. It has stolen the one thing that you will never achieve at your pace.

Peace.

You never see the beauty of the things you leave behind.

You’re gone.

You discard them with the next thing and leave them for people like me to discover.

Lucky me.

I get to see your art. Your intelligence. Your brilliance.

I get to see the impossible.

But you don’t. You can’t.

Because to see it all

Would be to lose your edge

In a race of hamster wheels.

So tell me.

Is it worth it?
