A Hot Cup of Comfort

A review of five of the most popular Starbucks holiday drinks

Abby Pingpank, Staff Writer

We are all well acquainted with Starbucks, but the topic of seasonal drinks usually begins and ends with the famous Pumpkin Spice latte. But, of course, there are many more interesting drinks to be savored this time of year.

This year on November 7th, five drinks were released for the holiday season, including the Peppermint Mocha, Eggnog Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Caramel Brulee Latte, and the White Chocolate Mocha Latte. All of these drinks can be iced, blended to Frappuccinos, and have any personalized changes to them. On the first day they were released, any order of a Starbucks hot drink came with a reusable holiday cup. Holiday foods accompanied the release of the drinks. These included snowman cookies, gingerbread loaves, peppermint bark cake pops, and snowman cake pops. All of these items will be available in stores until January 7th, 2020.

1.The Peppermint Mocha (My personal favorite).

This well-known drink is returning to Starbucks stores during the holiday season for the 17th year in a row. This drink combines espresso, chocolate, and peppermint combined with steamed milk of your choice.

2.The Toasted White Chocolate Mocha

This drink is returning once again, and its warm and sweet flavors make it a very popular drink… just not as popular as the Peppermint Mocha. If coffee is not your favorite this may be the perfect drink for you! Many people say the sweetness of the white chocolate overpowers the taste of coffee. The toasted white chocolate mocha is Morgan Cima’s go-to holiday drink. “I like it because it is warm,” the senior stated, “and it is has a very strong chocolate taste so it is nice to have on a cold morning.”

3. The Chestnut Praline Latte

This is one of the less known drinks. This combines steamed milk of your choice with flavors of roasted chestnuts, spices, and topped with pieces of praline and whipped cream. Junior Réka Götz said, “My favorite is the Chestnut Praline Latte because its sweet and subtle,  and most Starbucks drinks are overpowering with sweetness, and this one is the perfect balance of everything and you can appreciate the coffee in the drink.”

4. Caramel Brulee Latte

The Caramel Brulee Latte is a latte with caramel sauce with topped with whipped cream and caramel pieces. Junior Julia Poppa said her favorite holiday drink this year is the Caramel Brulee Latte. “I like this drink because it focuses more on the coffee than if you were to get a normal Starbucks drink.”

5. Eggnog Latte

The Eggnog Latte is a blend of eggnog and steamed milk added to the espresso forming the latte. This beverage is not as well known, mostly because of the eggnog. Eggnog has an acquired taste that many people of our age group tend to not enjoy. It seems to be the least popular of the five drinks that Starbucks released this year.

For this year’s drinks, Starbucks did pretty well. Many stores have decorated for Christmas to show their spirit, and help promote the holiday items. Even though we had some new drinks featured this year, some were sad that favorites from the previous year did not make it back… one major upset being the Gingerbread Latte and the Toffee Nut Crunch Latte. While enjoying this year’s selection of holiday drinks, I will be excitedly awaiting what Starbucks has in store for next year.
