The Advice is Right: Holiday Edition
December 18, 2017
Do you think it’s fair that some teachers give tests or important assignments on the day before the holiday break? -GiveMeABreak
Josie: I think it is beyond ridiculous to ask students to test on the day before the holiday break. At this point in time, everybody is ready for break, including teachers. I mean, what teacher wants to grade tests over break? Plus, most kids will be “sick” or legitimately absent the last day of break. There will be lots of make-ups to be completed after break, so it makes more sense to have it before the last day.
Lea: Personally, I find it diabolical, but it is technically fair since we do have school that day. My advice, take a personal day and ask if you can turn in the assignment or take the test early.
What is the perfect gift for my girlfriend for Christmas this year? -AldoTheApache
Josie: That’s tough, because you know her best. If you want to get her something personal, try giving her something more specific to what she likes. For example, if she loves ice skating and hot chocolate., treat her to a day downtown iceskating at PPG and take her out for hot chocolate at a nearby coffee shop. That way, you are spending time together doing something she likes. Or if you want to go the simple route, everyone loves bath bombs, fuzzy socks, and blankets.
Lea: If your goal is to impress, try asking her family or close friends if they know what that one special gift is that she wants this year. And if all else fails, get her a kitten:)
Any advice for gag Christmas gifts? -Django
Josie: A few funny ones online are a can of unicorn meat, a travel-size package of emergency underpants, or a can of spray cheese that reads “DIY Spray Tan Kit.”
Lea: Online you can by cheap replicas of the iPhone X that make for a pretty disappointing but funny gift.
What is the best holiday dish/snack to serve at my family dinner this year? -JackieBrown
Josie: A great holiday dish to serve is cheesy potatoes. This recipe can be found online and is great to serve as a side dish during your lunch or dinner. Being an addictive favorite at my household, the warm, flavorful dish is gone within seconds.
Lea: A fan favorite at my house is always a yummy dip with crackers. They are hard to mess up and addictively delicious.
How much money should I spend on a gift for a girl I am interested in without coming off as creepy? -Mr. Pink
Josie: As long as you don’t buy her something super extravagant, such as a car (which I’m sure no teenager can afford), she won’t think you’re creepy! A girl appreciates someone who is thoughtful and will be thankful for whatever you give to her. Don’t be afraid to show her how much you like her. Who knows, you may just win her over!
Lea: Go all out! Even if she does not reciprocate your feelings at first, she will still feel very grateful and appreciative of your thoughtfulness.

To the Advice is Right Staff–I love the advice you give and think it wise. But I wonder what Vincent Vega, Mr. Brown, and The Bride are struggling with. Will you answer their questions in a future post? Thanks and keep up the great work!
