In a Rush
Most students do not take advantage of the discounted ticket prices at Penguins’ games, but Briona Rice is sure to not miss out on cheap Student Rush tickets.

Most high-school students do not take advantage of the Student Rush ticket prices when going to the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey games, but senior Briona Rice has been to five Pens games and counting.
Rice gets tickets for only $15 when using the Student Rush student discount. In order to access the discount, students just type in their student email with .edu instead of .org at the end. By doing so, they are able to get Pens tickets at a remarkably low price.
Ticket prices vary according to each seat. The closer to the rink, the more expensive. However, the Student Rush tickets might not guarantee students the best seats in the house, but the discount on those seats will save at least $30 to $100 when purchasing a ticket.
In the 2020-2021 NHL season, the average price for a ticket at PPG Paints Arena was $155. In the 2021-2022 season, the average price lowered to about $42, although some of the ticket prices are well above $50.
By just typing in .edu, students can enjoy a fun hockey game while still having money left in their bank account. Pens games are always fun, from cheering on the team to getting milkshakes, being on the jumbotron, or just simply enjoying the hockey game with other hockey lovers.
“Some days when I have nothing to do at night, I will look online for Penguins tickets and ask a friend to go with me,” Rice said. “It is so simple and is always so much fun.”
When she has nothing better to do and is in the mood for some hockey, Rice uses the Penguins app to keep track of the upcoming games. She often invites friends to go with her to cheer on the Pens.
“Most of my friends had no idea about the Student Rush discount until I told them about it,” Rice said. “I feel like a lot of students do not take advantage of this and more students should.”
Last time Rice went to a game, she spent a total of $17, instead of the $50 she would have been paying for the same seat without the discount.
Though many students at North Allegheny do not know about the cheap Student Rush prices, college students at Pittsburgh campuses often use the same discount.
On Ticketmaster, the lowest price for a seat is $36 in section 227, 229, 230, and 231, which are at the top towards one end. The last time Rice went to a game, she and her friends sat in section 221, which is still at the top but in the middle of the rink. The prices for those seats are usually much higher.
But by using the Student Rush discount, tickets in the blue and gold zone are usually $12.50, while tickets in the red zone are usually $22.50. This guarantees that students save $9 in the blue zone, $15 in the gold zone, and $8 in the red zone.
Going to the Penguins game is always fun, and if more students know about it, they’ll be able to do so at a reasonable price.
