A Poem For Your Thoughts

Shel Silverstein: Carrots

Davis Creach, Arts Editor

Welcome back to A Poem For Your Thoughts! This week we have another fun and simple poem for you so stay tuned for a blast back to your childhood! For those of you who are new to the column, here’s the scoop: Each edition will include two poems, the first being a featured piece written by a famous poet that will be analyzed and interpreted according to my point of view. Of course, everyone’s interpretation is different and valid, and the comment section will be open for any further discussion. The second piece is written by yours truly and will be open to complete interpretation and analysis. Go forth, enjoy, and as you read, remember: “It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see.” – Henry David Thoreau

Poem One: Carrots by Shel Silverstein

Thoughts: No Silverstein poem would be complete without its accompanying drawing. Many of you have probably heard of, if not read, Shel Silverstein’s work. He is a light-hearted, care-free, and fun poet who writes ridiculous poems with equally hilarious illustrations to match. This particular poem is one of my favorites from childhood, coming from the pages of Silverstein’s classic book Falling Up. Silverstein is a master of conveying satire and childish innocence, which is clearly evident here. Like all of Silverstein’s poems, Carrots is so simple and funny that there is not much to say in terms of analyzation. After all, the picture says it all. A classic poem from the days of our childhood.

Poem Two: Secret of Patience by D.C.

Patience: a virtue one must learn in his lifetime, no matter the difficulty.

Conquering soul and body? Taming the beast within? Inconceivable!

Nay, there is an overlooked trick of the trade:

The sacred matrimony between Sir Patience his beautiful bride Love.
