Though the first big dance of the year lasts merely a few hours, Student Council has been planning Homecoming for well over half a year.
“We had a meeting where we discussed possible themes in April of last year,” StuCo sponsor Mr. Karolski said. “And then we had a really large meeting in June where we voted on three proposed themes.”
The winning theme: Cloud 9.
“[There’s] going to be lots of clouds, lots of fluffiness,” Karolski added. “Students in Student Council were given take-home kits with toilet paper rolls, pillow stuffing, and hot glue guns, and creatively made clouds out of that.”
Lauren Keyser, StuCo Publicity Director and Head of the Dance Committee, expressed her excitement for the student-made decorations.
“They are student-made, so each one is unique,” she said.
Karolski has been content to allow his group to lead the way.
“It is all student-driven. We did do a Cloud 9 MORP dance three years ago, I believe, and the decorations were amazing for that, so when they said they were going to do this theme again, I thought it was a great one to fire up.”
The dance will begin at 7:30pm this Saturday and will be held in the NASH gym and cafeteria. In addition to dancing, students will have the opportunity to take photos in a photo booth, eat snacks provided by the NASH cafeteria, and play games throughout the night.
“It has taken countless hours and hard work from all of our amazing Student Council officers and member,” StuCo President Anna Bridges said.
Student interest in the Homecoming dance has always been strong, but recent years have seen a surge in ticket sales.
“We sold approximately 990 tickets this year, Karolski said. “That’s a lot of students attending. Historically we’ve had about 800 students attend Homecoming, but last year and this year, we’ve seen a huge uptick in students who want to come.”
To prepare for the surge, StuCo members are planning to arrive at NASH on Saturday morning at 8:00 to decorate the gym and cafeteria.
“Students can expect to have an amazing night filled with games and dancing with their friends,” Bridges said.
