Located only about four miles away from NASH, Cats N’At is a calm sanctuary home to 11 adoptable cats and 16 kittens.  Since its doors opened in late 2021, it has quickly become a hotspot for both cats in need of homes and people who enjoy their company.

Originally opened in Wexford, Cats N’At relocated to its current spot in June 2021. Their central mission is simple, as stated by owner Kim McMillan: “Adopt out as many kitties as we can to good loving homes.”

“I’ve just always loved cats,” McMillan added when asked what her motivation was to open the establishment.

Upon entering, I was greeted by a boutique filled with cat-themed merchandise and gifts with a few cats lounging around. A short walk down a narrow hallway took me back to the main lounge area, where most of the adoptable cats spend their time. The lounge is filled with natural light, scratching posts, cozy hiding spots under chairs and other furniture, and even a television playing videos of birds in nature scenes. Some formerly feral cats who have never seen a TV before were especially engaged as they watched closely, even batting at the screen as if they were catching the birds. Many of the cats in the lounge are outgoing, as one even eagerly hopped into my lap and began to knead my legs.

However, there is also an attached “quiet” room where the more timid cats can retreat. Nevertheless, many of the cats in that room were still receptive to the attention I gave them and gladly accepted my affection.

One unique aspect of Cats N’At is that they don’t offer same-day adoptions. Instead, they invest time into ensuring cats are matched with owners who can fully understand their personalities and needs. Every cat has also already spent time in a foster home, which allows time to learn about the individual temperament of each before they are put up for adoption.

Visitors pay $10 per half hour spent with the cats, and both appointments and walk-ins are welcome.

But normal visits aren’t all Cats N’At offers. They frequently host a variety of events including yoga, charcuterie nights, and painting, combining fun activities with cat visiting. They also offer birthday parties, where you can privately rent out the entire lounge & boutique to enjoy time with friends and bond with the cats. Fostering plays a big role in the operation of the establishment. McMillan mentioned that fostering is critical for their rescue efforts, especially with the increasing number of surrendered cats and kittens being born. “You could have the cats for a month, or two weeks,” she explained. To foster or adopt, you must be 21 or older and have a separate room in your house initially designated for the foster cat.

McMillan emphasized that the biggest need at Cats N’At is currently foster homes, followed by cat litter.

“Seven days a week. Even if it’s Christmas, it doesn’t matter. You still have to come here and feed the kitties,” McMillan said.

Her dedication is evident in the homey and unique environment of Cats N’At, making it not just a place for cats and their adoptions but also a peaceful retreat for visitors.

Since opening, they have successfully carried out 403 adoptions. If you’re looking for a new feline family member or simply just love cats and want some time to unwind with them, consider visiting!
