Megan Moroney grew up in Douglasville, Georgia. She was raised in a very musical family, both her parents played guitar and she was involved in chorus and talent shows all throughout her high school years.
Although she had so much love for country music and singing, she never believed that she could make it a career. Moroney’s influences were Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, and Taylor Swift.
At the ripe age of 16, she experienced her first romantic heartbreak. Her dad then suggested that she learn how to play guitar in order to cope with the pain. Soon after she learned to play, she began singing with her father and brother, uploading many videos of her singing covers of country songs to her Instagram.
After graduating high school, she went to college for accounting at the University of Georgia. While in her college years at 19, she experienced a truly shattering heartbreak and began writing as a form of therapy. She continued her accounting degree in college while singing for fun and eventually joining a sorority.
In the spring of her freshman year, her entire sorority used their budget on getting country singer Jon Langston to perform for an event. Her sorority sisters then had the bright idea for Moroney to open for him because of all the country covers she posted on her Instagram. Coincidentally, Chase Rice, a country singer and songwriter, was there that night to watch her perform.
After the show, Rice went up to Moroney and asked her to open for his show that was the following month. Moroney then got to work on an original song to sing, and once she got to perform, there was no turning back. She fell in love with it.
Moroney then made the decision that she wanted to pursue music and changed her major to digital marketing and music business in order to gain knowledge about the music industry before continuing her dream.
In June of 2020, she spent every waking moment writing songs and trying to make connections in the music industry. As she continued to write, she posted her songs on social media and eventually began to earn a following.
Finally, in 2022, she found her team of producers and released her first EP. The song “Hair Salon” blew up on TikTok, and soon after, so did her other song called “Tennessee Orange.” After Tennessee Orange got attention, her career really took off and she gained lots of attention.
Her first album, Lucky, was released on May 5, 2023. It encapsulates her confident personality and what she loves most–Georgia. Her lyrics focus on love and heartbreak and give hope to all listeners. The album reached the top 40 on the Billboard 200.
Just this past summer, country music superstar Kenny Chesney recruited Moroney as his opener for his Sun Goes Down tour. This was her first time performing in stadiums, and she used the entire summer experience as a way to gain wisdom from such an icon of country music. She used every bit of mentoring that she could take and viewed it as a learning opportunity.
On July 12, 2024, her sophomore album Am I Okay? was released. Since then, it has been in the top 10 on Billboard’s 200 chart. The album begins with a song describing the complicated emotions of being in love after years of heartbreak. She has branded herself as the “emo cowgirl.” She wanted to trick her fanbase into thinking that the title track would be another sad song about a boy. However, it is anything but, as it celebrates the beginning of a new love.
Though her journey has been short so far, Moroney has earned thousands of fans with her beautiful, raspy voice and touched millions of hearts through her lyrics.
