Spotify Wrapped, the annual roundup showcasing each user’s most frequently played songs on the app over the course of the year, came out on December 4th, and students at NASH took strong notice. From pop to alternative to hip hop, students’ tastes spanned the gamut of genres.
Many students were very interested in Billie Eilish this year — not too much of a surprise, though, with the success of her recent album Hit Me Hard And Soft.
Junior Alicia Gasanas’ top song was “Wildflower” by Billie Eilish.
“This was my top song, and it definitely makes sense,” she said. “I’ve listened to that song on repeat since it came out. I love Billie’s new era of lyricism. It really resonated with me.”
Junior Kyle Byrne is also in his Billie listening phase.
“My top song was “Birds of a Feather,” in preparation for the HMHAS tour,” Byrne said. “I was listening to a ton of Billie and I do love her music, but I don’t think Spotify Wrapped accurate because I think there are some other songs that I enjoy more. Not really any special meaning with me listening, just a beautiful song!”
Junior Olivia Rodgers is in her Tortured Poets Department era.
“My top song was “Guilty as Sin?” by Taylor Swift,” she said. “I am not really sure why this is my top song. It really surprised me. It was my favorite song off of TTPD, so maybe that’s why, but I’m not much of a Taylor listener, although most of my friends are. I think she is an incredible singer and a positive influence, so I’m not necessarily upset about it. I guess I often pick the music my friends and I listen to and this song ended up on top.”
Some NASH students steered away from the pop scene.
Junior Cate Lukitsch’s top song was “In The Night” by Childish Gambino.
“I listened to it a lot, especially before and after his concert,” she said. “It was definitely accurate because I played it like 42 times in a week. I just love Jorja Smith’s part.”
Senior Johannes Brinzer went away from the mainstream and his top song was “Babydoll” by Dominic Fike.
“It’s a feel good song and I have Dominic Fikes discography on 25/8,” she said.
Junior Suela Raci streamed “White Ferrari” by Frank Ocean the most.
“It’s very calming and relatable,” she said.
“I Bet On Losing Dogs” by Mitski was the song most streamed by junior Emmeline Opre.
“It’s not very accurate, as I listened to other songs more, but I loved the song because of the symbolism present,” she said.
With the new year a little over a week away, students’ listening journeys will surely continue, and Spotify Wrapped will surely continue to entertain.
