What inspired you to first become a teacher?
My father was a high school math teacher and coach. His dedication to the profession and concern for his students inspired me since I was young. Teaching is in my blood.
How long have you been at North Allegheny, and how has NASH changed over the years?
I started at NASH in 1995 as a student teacher and Writing Center intern. The year after that, I was hired as an English teacher and eventually moved into the GOAL department. NASH used to have a Writing Center, and my first classroom is now called “The PLACE.” The 240s hallway, where the GOAL Office resides, did not exist until 2002 or 2003.
What different subjects have you taught over the years or what has been your favorite role at NA?
I taught many English courses including American Literature, Composition 3 and 4, Leadership, and Creative Writing (which was my personal favorite). As much as I loved teaching English, I really enjoy my current role as a GOAL teacher because I get to focus on content areas such as the arts, English, medicine, and service.
What do you enjoy most about being a GOAL teacher?
There’s so much to love! Working with highly motivated students energizes me, and I get to know them as well as their families. My role allows for a lot of creativity as I plan for unique experiences inside and outside of school. Most of all, I love helping students to achieve the goals they set for themselves.
What accomplishments or moments in your career are you most proud of?
For years, I served as a co-sponsor for Variations, NASH’s Literary and Creative Arts magazine. I’m still so proud of those publications because they helped to highlight the writing and artistic achievements of our NASH students. Another highlight would have to be the Grandview Mentoring Project, which I ran for 12 years.
How did you first get involved with Interact Club and Rotary?
I started advising the Interact Club when a co-worker and friend who used to run it retired. She thought I’d be a good fit for the group because I enjoy serving in the community. I became a Rotarian two years ago when I learned about a new international e-club that focuses on helping women and children.
What have been some of the most rewarding projects you’ve led through Interact?
The project closest to my heart was the Grandview Mentoring Project. NASH students were paired with 3rd-5th graders at Pittsburgh Grandview where they served as pen pals, tutors, and role models. The kiddos from Grandview loved the extra help and attention, and the NASH students attained a deeper understanding of community, resilience, and life outside of NA.
Outside of the classroom, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy the most?
I’m happiest when I’m hanging out with my two adult children and husband! I also enjoy reading, walking through my neighborhood, baking, and spending time in nature.
If you weren’t a teacher, what do you think you would be doing instead?
Hmmm, tough one… Maybe a writer, a museum educator, or something in the medical field.
What kind of music do you like?
Honestly, I don’t listen to music very often. I’m more of a podcast or audio book person. If I do listen to music, it’s probably from the late 80s or early 90s, or alternative rock.
What are some of your favorite books or authors?
I love to read! My favorite classics are Emma by Jane Austen, Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. My non-fiction favorites are Happiness at Home by Gretchen Rubin, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
What is one thing that students may be surprised to learn about you?
My maiden name was Tobacco. I could not wait to change my name when I got married.
If you could give one piece of advice to high school students today, what would it be?
Many years from now, you won’t remember the day-to-day minutiae of high school. But you might remember the special experiences and people you connected with. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the classroom: take the field trip, push yourself to try something new, and create the memories you will cherish for the rest of your life.
