As one of the few Seniors who will be returning to Prom this year, I can truly say that it was one of the best nights of my life and look forward to going again. With my experience attending the biggest dance of the year, I’ve compiled a few Rants and Raves about 2018 North Allegheny Senior Prom.

RAVES

The best thing about Prom is that it’s everything that you imagined from when you were younger. Dressing up, making your promposal, and taking pictures are a dream come true. In the midst of AP tests, college decisions, and so much stress about the rest of our lives, Prom provides a night that will wash away all of our worries. Oh what a night!

Perhaps the second best thing is the colossal effort that NA puts in to making Prom a magical night. The money that you put in goes towards paying for the facilities and dinner at the David Lawrence Convention Center. Furthermore, Post Prom is a great way to end the best night of your life in high school. The parents in charge put in their full commitment to bring together food, entertainment, and much more for you to do. On top of providing tons of fun for hundreds of students, it keeps kids out of potential trouble.

No matter what kind of dancing you’re accustomed to, Prom is really the only NASH dance that provides it all. The music is a healthy mix that includes some clubbing music for the party types, slow dances for when you want to have a romantic moment, and some throwback tunes to whip out your wackiest dance moves. If this year’s dance is anything like last year’s, I can almost guarantee that you’ll have a good time dancing your night away.

RANTS

Amidst all the magic of Prom, the organizing that goes on before the dance even starts often causes more stress than its worth. Prom groups, pictures, limos and more are all relatively pointless things that drive wedges between boys and girls alike.  What is supposed be a remarkable night is all too often bogged down about details that you won’t remember looking back.

Post Prom is a great time with tons of things to do, yet the night just goes on, and on, and on. At 3 AM, your brain begins to shut down after a long night of dancing and socializing, but, you still have at least an hour and half until you can leave. You’re funneled into the auditorium where a ventriloquist “hypnotizes” students; in reality everyone is just so tired and burnt out after a long night where you just want to go home and sleep.

I appreciate everything that the Convention Center has to offer, but in comparison to previous Proms at the Omni William Penn Hotel, it’s simply not as classy. The Omni Penn has beautiful staircases, balconies, and so many places to take pictures. Now, all we get is a ledge overlooking the Pittsburgh skyline and a big rectangular room with no windows or features. The night is what we make of it, but the Convention Center may not be the best venue for our last dance as high school students.
