RANTS

What’s up with the five-minute bathroom passes? I mean, I get it, class time is important. There’s also that vaping in the bathroom problem that literally every single teacher has gone over, but it takes me more than five minutes to just find the closest bathroom. Trying to find the closest bathroom, use it, and get back to the classroom under five minutes can be difficult for people. What if there’s an emergency that can’t be taken care of in less than five minutes? I’ve experienced a teacher asking a student what took them so long, and when it is one of those emergencies, it’s a very uncomfortable conversation.

Speaking of uncomfortable, remember back in 2008 when Hot N Cold by Katy Perry (0r just Katy Perry, in general) was big? I have a feeling the school somehow got stuck in that time and still has that as it’s favorite song. Unfortunately, the song was taken a bit literally. I’m unable to feel my hands most of the day because of the freezing temperatures in some of the classrooms, and when I finally make it to a classroom that doesn’t give me hypothermia, I’m sweating like a pig because of the heat. It’s a big school, I know that, but how hard is it to have a little bit of consistency?

Something the school seems to be consistent with, however, is the lack of windows. I miss the days when I could look outside to figure out what the heck the weather is doing. Now, I have to look at a weather app or hope the kids that have gym went outside. I can’t understand why the person who built this school decided that having little to no windows and replacing them with those murderous florescent lights was a great idea. One of these days, I’m gonna forget what season it is because I can’t physically see what’s happening out there.

RAVES

Unrelated to the temperature, I am a junior this year and have noticed that there is a somewhat strict rule about food not being allowed in classrooms. However, some teachers still seem to be a tad lenient about it and will allow you to have a small snack, as long as it’s not distracting. While you can’t eat absolutely anything you want, having the ability to at least have a granola bar or even a fruit cup really is a ray of light for the kids with later lunch periods and is very appreciated.

Speaking of teachers, the ones I have met so far are super rad. They each have their own little quirks, and it makes me more comfortable when it comes to communicating with them. Some of my teachers have even shown us picture slideshows of their families or trips they’ve been on, too. They feel like real people with real personalities and lives outside of school.

Something I really like about NASH is the number of clubs there are. It feels like there’s an endless amount of options you have, and they’re all interesting, too! Most of the clubs are properly advertised around the school, so if you need to figure out a little bit more about a club, you just have to look on the wall. I feel like, with just how many clubs there are, I can participate in school activities that are fun and introduce me to new people.
