Behind the Mask

Meet Ashleigh Pettruciolo

Nick Giorgetti, Politics Editor

You were in Marching Band before becoming the mascot, right?

Yes, I was in Marching Band two years before I became a mascot.

What made you switch?

Everyone in the Band told me my personality would couple well with the mascot role, so I just decided to try it.

Do you enjoy it?

It’s a lot of fun.  The football games are a great time.

Describe an average football game.

I walk back and forth for an hour on the track greeting people, and then I have a 30-minute break behind the bleachers.  After that, I help set up the field for the halftime show.  Then, I stand by the Band at the 50-yard line, while they perform their halftime show.  The rest of my night is high-fiving people and hugging little kids.

What is your favorite part about your role?

I can be who I want to be.  Because I’m one of two mascots along with Mauren Mitchell, my identity is practically anonymous.

How about your least favorite part?

A: The parades– they’re really hot.  However, I wear an ice vest which has two small ice packs in the front and one big one in the back.  It works really well and lessens the pain of the heat.

What’s your favorite memory so far?

A: A couple weeks ago, I was walking around the flute section and they tackled me.  My sister plays the flute in the Band, so that explains why!

Let’s end with your advice to younger kids who might be hoping to someday wear the costume n Friday nights.

Always be happy.  Even when you take the mascot head off, you always need to be smiling.  It just isn’t good when you take your mask off and someone sees that you’re not smiling.
