Small Restaurants Review

A review of five different local restaurants that you must visit.

Megan Wilson, Staff Writer

Wexford is one of the best places to go out and eat. Within a radius of just a few miles, there are loads of different places with a variety of foods for all tastes and appetites. Route 19 itself is home to almost all of the restaurants on this list, and they’re all decently priced and offer good food.

Nicky’s Thai Kitchen

There are numerous foreign food places around, but not many Thai food restaurants. There are three locations of Nicky’s Thai Kitchen: one on the North Side, one downtown, and one on Mt. Nebo. The location on Mt. Nebo road is my favorite, mainly because of the decor, both inside and in the outdoor garden. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with cool bedazzled sculptures of cats, Buddhas, and even an elephant head on the wall.  They serve a variety of homemade Thai cuisine. They have many different types of appetizers, including my favorite, chicken satay, which is marinated grilled chicken on skewers that has a side of peanut sauce to dip them in. Trust me, they are delicious! For entrees, there is again a lot to pick from. At my most recent visit, I tried the fried rice and got it with a level one spice. The levels go up to 5 depending on how adventurous you are. The fried rice was delicious, so I would definitely recommend trying it when you go!

Totin’s

Totin’s has the biggest pancakes around. Not only that, but it also has cool retro decor, with old booths and counter seating. There is a bunch of autographed memorabilia, such as old Steelers gear and collectible cars — some of which are for sale for customers to purchase. It’s an old fashioned diner that is super popular, so getting a table at breakfast time on the weekend is nearly impossible. But lucky for you, they are open through the afternoon so you can eat breakfast all day. As for the food, there are many items you can put in your pancakes, like M&M’s, chocolate chips, and other tasty ingredients. They also have huge, delicious omelets, eggs, breakfast sandwiches and every other breakfast food that you can imagine. Totin’s is within walking distance of NASH, so give it a try one weekend morning.

Waffles Incaffeinated

Located right in front of our school is Waffles Incaffeinated. The restaurant itself is really nice and has ample seating for how small the restaurant actually is. They offer a plentiful menu full of different breakfast food, but they are best known for selling different types of waffles. I ordered the chicken and waffles and was not very impressed. They weren’t bad, but they are definitely not the greatest. The service was also not very good. The food came out quickly but getting refills on drinks and getting the check took a pretty long time. I was disappointed with my meal, as having waffles in the name gives the impression that that is their specialty, so I would have expected better.

Stack’d

Located right near the famous Chick-Fil-A is one of the best burger places around. I visited this place last Sunday and got to sit next to their big fireplace that warms up all the tables around it during the chilly season. It was a very pleasant experience. They have a menu with a ton of different things to order. The appetizers all looked delicious. I ended up ordering the mozzarella sticks, which were absolutely amazing. Not only was their cheese inside, they even sprinkled more cheese on them to make them better. As a main course, I made my own burger from a long list of ingredients to make your burger unique – buns, cheese, toppings, and sauces. I choose a pretzel bun, American cheese, bacon and ketchup – my absolute favorite combination of things for the perfect burger. It was very good, and definitely one of the best burgers I’ve had in the area.

Wexford Ale House

This local establishment is now under a new name, Poor Richard’s Ale House, which is actually the place’s original name, too. Unfortunately, it is definitely close to the bottom of this list in terms of food. Don’t get me wrong, they have great service, as we got our food in less than twenty minutes, and a variety of food to choose from. They have meals such as wings, appetizers, and sandwiches. Even so, the food was just mediocre, and not anything special. I ordered a chicken sandwich with fries. The fries that came with my order, which were sprinkled in a garlic cheese mix, were definitely the best part of the meal. The sandwich was definitely not the best. The grilled chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A is in my opinion, better than this one.

Overall, our above list has food options for all tastes, from large breakfasts to spicy dinners, with a variety of appetizers and burgers in between. I urge you to try one of these places and support the local food establishments in our area.
