In January 2024 an untitled period film directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Micheal B. Jordan was announced. Given Coogler’s previous directorial projects, like Black Panther, its sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the Creed trilogy, the excitement for his next film was palpable.
Later that year, on September 24th, 2024, a trailer dropped for a film titled Sinners. The trailer was well-received, with fans praising the originality of the film and the cinematography in just the few clips alone.
On April 18th, 2025, Sinners was released in theaters, quickly becoming critically acclaimed and grossing $63 million worldwide in just its first week. Following two twin brothers who return to their hometown in Mississippi for a night of freedom, who get attacked by a mysterious vampiric figure, the film was an instant smash.
On October 30th, 2025, Sinners returned to select IMAX theaters for an exclusive one-week run for fans to see how it’s truly meant to be experienced.
Set in the rural Jim Crow south, Sinners doesn’t shy away from its culture.
With a cast consisting of primarily people of color, the film’s black culture is one of its many high points. Racial tension, the blues, interracial relationships, and the Ku Klux Klan all make appearances, serving as an insight into what people of color experienced in everyday life during the Jim Crow era.
Sinners is a true genre fusion, combining horror, comedy, drama, and action. This all culminates in a transcendent sequence almost four minutes in length and backed by “I Lied to You” by Miles Caton, that combines elements from all types of cultures and genres.
Music is without a doubt the heart and soul of Sinners. From southern blues to classic Irish tunes the film has something for everyone. In addition to a gorgeous 22 song soundtrack, the film also the central theme of music transcending time.
Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Mary and has a song titled “Dangerous,” feels this theme deeply.
“It was such a surreal experience, coming off of this movie, feeling so, so deeply inspired as a person, but as an actor and as a musician,” Steinfeld stated in an interview with Radio Times.
Leading the soundtrack is Miles Caton, who also plays protagonist Samuel Moore. Caton has plenty of excellent songs, but the standout is “I Lied to You”.
One of the most notable aspects of the film is the beauty of every single shot. Sinners made history as the first film to be shot and released with a dual camera shooting technique, using the IMAX 65mm camera and the Ultra Panavision 70 system, a decision by Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw.
“The two formats felt far more immersive than anything we had seen,” Arkapaw stated in an interview with the American Film Institute.
Combining well established celebrities with first-time actors paid off for Coogler.
Jordan was already a confirmed cast member before Sinners even had a title, but what fans did not expect that he would be playing twins, having to shoot every scene multiple times. Having worked with Coogler in Black Panther, Jordan was already an easy pick for the film.
“I did every scene like four times, fives times, so I think the balance between going back and forth was difficult at times,” Jordan explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Caton, however, was a musician who had never acted in a film.
The remainder of leading cast includes Steinfeld as Mary, Wunmi Mosaku as Annie, Omar Benson Miller as Cornbread, Jayme Lawson as Pearline, Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim, Li Jun Li as Grace Chow, Thomas Pang as Bo Chow, Lola Kirke as Joan, Peter Dreimanis as Bert, and Jack O’Connell as the main antagonist Remmick.
Sinners is a masterclass in every category. Between the culture-filled drama, the cast chemistry, the breathtaking cinematography, the edge-of-your-seat horror, and the ethereal soundtrack, the film deserves all of its numerous accolades.
Don’t miss your chance to see it in select IMAX theaters this week!
