On October 24, 2025, the movie Regretting You was released in theaters. The film stars Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace and is based on the novel by Colleen Hoover, which was published in 2019. It is an emotional story that follows the relationship of a mother and daughter across significant family trauma and changes.
After receiving 3.5 stars on Google reviews, 28 % Rotten Tomatoes, and 6.2/10 on IMDb, the film has received mixed emotions from audiences. I, for one, thought overall the movie was good. It wasn’t the best movie I have seen, but the story captivated my attention and kept me engaged the whole time.
The director of the film is Josh Boone, who made his industry breakthrough with The Fault in Our Stars (2014), which earned $48 million in its opening weekend. Throughout his career, Boone has worked across many different genres, including horror, supernatural, and of course, romance. Some of his notable works include The Stand (2020 miniseries) and The New Mutants (2020).
One thing I greatly enjoyed about the film was the cast.
Grace has a crucial role in portraying the movie’s plot as she plays one of the main protagonists, Clara Grant. She does a fantastic job displaying the anger, love, and sadness of a teenage girl trying to navigate her newly complicated life. She feels as if her mother doesn’t see her, and she wants to be free of her grasp. Additionally, Grace provides the audience with comedic relief when scenes appear to be somber or ominous.
Thames also has a central role in the movie’s success. For many fans, he is the reason they watched the movie. The actor has starred in countless films, including The Black Phone (2021), Incoming (2024), and How to Train your Dragon (2025). Thames charms the audience in his role as Miller Adams, Clara’s love interest. He is the calm, caring, and emotionally safe boy in this complicated story.
Clara and Miller’s relationship is built slowly and goes through many rough patches, but in the end it completes the film. Miller is steady and gentle, while Clara appears to be chaotic and full of emotion. Together, they bring out the best in each other and show that anything is possible if you have each other.
My only complaint was the pacing of the movie. The beginning and the end flew by, but the middle felt a little dragged out. The high tensions and fights between Clara and her mom start to become repetitive. In other words, it is just a long period of sad scenes and I got impatient and wanted the story to move faster.
Another thing I loved about the movie was the soundtrack. The first song I liked was “When You Were Young” by The Killers. The song helps to capture the reality of growing up which is a big theme in the movie. Another great song was “Writing’s On The Wall” by Role Model. It’s catchy and upbeat, allowing the viewers into Clara’s point of view. The final song of the film is “Everywhere, Everything (with Gracie Abrams)” by Noah Kahan. It was my favorite for two reasons. First, I love both of those artists. Second, it perfectly weaves every emotion displayed by the film into one song. It made me feel completely satisfied as I walked out of the theater.
Ultimately, Regretting You is a film that touches on bittersweet family drama and its challenges while learning to love again. Go watch the movie now. I promise you won’t regret it.
