The Weekender: Wood Street Galleries

For art fans and photo nerds alike, this hidden treasure is sure to please

Located just above the Wood Street T-Station Downtown, the Wood Street Galleries showcase an ever-changing array of exhibitions created by artists from all around the world. With a newfound, growing interest in diverse media concepts, these talented and unique works of art can be found all over, especially in Pittsburgh. Alongside the more common destinations like the Mattress Factory and Randyland, the Wood Street Galleries provide the same style of innovative artistry with a more intimate feel.

Currently, the galleries house two installations from a collaboration called Nonotak Studio. Noemi Schipfer, a talented kinetic artist, worked alongside Takami Nakamoto, an architect and musician, to create scenes that would transport viewers somewhere new. Utilizing sound, light, and movement, these concepts are on another level. The first of the two pieces, entitled “narrow.V3”, is a modified version of the original concept altered specifically for the galleries on Wood Street. On the floor above sits “Daydream V.5”, a piece premiering for the first time anywhere. Both installations will be on display until December 31st of this calendar year.

This Cultural District must-see is free to the public, open seven days a week, and conveniently located in town. The galleries are maintained by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and are additionally supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, in conjunction with public donations. If you enjoy art, unusual photo spots, or just happen to be heading into the city over the long weekend, I would highly suggest checking out this location.
