It’s hard to say exactly which trends will last and which ones will soon be forgotten … but we have some ideas.

2018 ushered in a variety of fashion trends, and many have carried through to 2019. Some of these trends are new, some bring back old styles, but regardless, they all dominated fashion in the past year.

To return to classic 90s fashion, scrunchies came back for casual, everyday outfits. Scrunchies are one of the few trends that are both useful and cute. While most people choose just to wear them as a bracelet on the wrist, it’s always nice to have something on hand to quickly pull your hair back that’s a little more charming than a plain black hair tie.

To channel everyone’s inner athlete, biker shorts somehow entered the casual, everyday fashion world — another wonderful thing we can thank the Kardashians for. While dysfunctional, these half-leggings are also atrocious to look at. Let’s hope that biker shorts will fade out over the course of 2019 and go back to the only place they belong: the Tour de France.

While slip-on Vans have been around for a while, they blew up in 2018 and continue to be a staple in both girls’ and guys’ closets in 2019. The classic white vans and the slightly edgy black and white checkered fans are the most common — it’s hard to not see a pair anytime you leave the house. Even just walking through the halls of NASH, you are guaranteed to at least 40% of the student body wearing them. They are comfortable, convenient and cool, so let’s hope they become a timeless trend!

A trend that YouTube star Emma Chamberlain has popularized is plaid pants. Plaid pants are the perfect article to dress up with a nice pair of boots, a blazer, or just a plain shirt. Either way, you are left looking like a put-together snack.

During the fall 2018 season, teddy jackets and ‘wubby’ jackets took over every teenage girl’s wardrobe. As a functional way to stay warm in fall and winter weather, they are a pretty decent trend. They can be easily dressed up or down, which makes them perfect for a variety of outfits — not to mention how extremely COMFORTABLE they are!!

‘Dad fashion’ has come into style over the past few years, particularly dad sneakers. These are the chunky, ugly and eye-catching shoes taking over everyone’s Instagram feed, most commonly the FILA brand shoes. These are pretty hard to style and usually end up ruining an outfit, but honestly, if worn right, they can be a really interesting statement piece. No one knows how long this trend will stay around, but in the meantime, unless you are an ultimate fashionista, maybe leave the dad sneakers to actual dads.

This past year, many mothers have found their daughters in their closets trying to steal their old jeans. Mom jeans have taken storm all over the world, being the perfect pants if you want to just lounge around the house but still be ready to roll if someone asks you to hang out. These pants are super comfy and super cute, making them a better alternative to sweatpants on a lazy Thursday.

When purses become too much of a hassle, millennials new favorite way to carry their stuff is through the use of fanny packs. Fanny packs are another trend from the 90s that have been resurrected this past year. While fanny packs may be practical in some cases, the backlash some get for wearing one can be very harsh.

While 2018 wasn’t known for being incredibly sunny, weird-shaped sunglasses still gained their fame. Sunglasses have become increasingly popular throughout the years, but this past year tiny, oddly shaped pairs have taken storm. Whether they are reflective, heart shaped, or cat eye, funky-shaped sunglasses seem to be here to stay.
