In the Game

Meet future UVA Cavalier Derek Devine

Josie Wadlow, Editor-in-Chief

How long have you played football?

Since the 7th grade.

Why do you like playing football?

It’s fun, and you get to hit people. There’s also the part of being the team. We have a strong bond.

What position do you play for NA football?

Offensive tackle.

Is that the position you think you’ll play in college, or will you be playing something else?

Yeah, I should play that in college. If not, I will play somewhere on the offensive line.

How has football influenced your time in high school?

It has made it a lot more enjoyable and I have made a lot of friends.

What colleges were interested in having you play for them?

Buffalo, Bowling Green, and Eastern Kentucky gave me offers, and I was talking to Toledo, Temple, and Pitt.

Besides the sports programs, what else were you considering and looking into while looking at colleges?

The academics and the coaches. I really wanted to click with the coaching staff at whatever school I chose. I also wanted a school with good academics in order to get a good job after school.

What made you choose the University of Virginia?

It was my best offer football-wise. I loved the coaches and it is a great academic school. It fit every category.

Do recent political events in Charlottesville, particularly the white supremacist rally, make you nervous to attend there?

No. I visited Virginia a couple of times, and nothing like that has ever happened there before. Everyone in Charlottesville is super welcoming whenever I am there.

What role did your parents play in your decision-making process regarding the University of Virginia?

They stayed out of it for the most part, but they were happy with the decision I made.

Did Coach Walker or any other coaches assist you in the process?

They assisted a little bit. I was always talking to Coach Walker and Coach Buchert about it. They would help me out along the way. They gave me guidance, and if I had questions they were always there to answer. Also, they spoke to schools for me and helped me get recruited.

What advice would you give someone going through the recruiting process?

Be patient and keep working hard. Everything will fall into place for you.

Now that you’ve committed, what is your involvement at UVA?

After my football season, I will probably have to do workouts for them. I will also have my official signing day in the spring. Besides that, I won’t do much until I get there.

How early in the summer next year will you have to begin football practice?

I report July 6th. I will attend summer class and go to workouts.

What do you plan on studying throughout your years?

I am undecided right now.

Do you participate in any other sports at NA? If yes, do colleges mind if you play another sport, or do they worry about injuries?

I do not know yet. My coaches at UVA are fine with my interest in other sports. Plus, the Wrestling Team wants me to be on the team this year. I am still deciding, but I will most likely be wrestling.

What will you miss about high school football?

Friday night lights.
