For the 11th and 12th graders of the building, it has only been a few years since we’ve had to sign out before a restroom visit. On December 6th, however, the student body learned that the old rule was in effect at NASH.

Now any student planning on using the restroom during class or heading down to the cafeteria for breakfast during homeroom must provide their name, destination, and time in full.

“The Safety and well-being of students are always on our minds,” NASH principal John Kreider said. “In the event of any kind of emergency, we need to have the knowledge of where each student is in the building”.

Kreider added, “If there is any kind of vandalism or misconduct of that nature, it allows us to take a look at the students who were unaccounted for at that time”.

The new standard has already received a slew of mixed reactions, as many students are confused by this sudden change of protocol.

“The sign in and sign out sheet is inconveniencing the whole for the actions of a few,” said Junior, Rin Swann.

Elizabeth Herald had an even stronger reaction. “We aren’t middle schoolers and we shouldn’t be treated like them,” the junior said.

On the other hand, senior Mike Leahy saw the new policy as a sensible move. “It’s fine,” Leahy said. “It’s practical to those who actually need to use the bathroom”.

Math teacher Nick Hannan’s view was more nuanced. “It’s neither very difficult nor time-consuming, so I’m not worried about it,” Hannan said. “My only concern would be students not recording themselves accurately”.

Despite the varying reactions on the part of students and staff, the new hallway protocol is not likely to change.
