From Trig to Twin Peaks with the Math Dept’s Youngest Teacher

How often do you trim your beard?

Every five days to 7.5 millimeters.

What do you eat for breakfast?

Every day: tomato, banana, and greek yogurt. I like fruits for breakfast, fast and easy.

Coffee or Tea?

Tea.

What kind of shows do you watch? Favorite show?

Surreal, fantasy, Sci-fi. My favorite show is Twin Peaks 

Favorite thing to do outside of school?

Books, video games (Undertale, Dark Souls, Minecraft), and nature

What clique of students did you belong to in high school?

Nerds.

What is your favorite math lesson to teach?

Introduction to Trigonometry and the Unit Circle. It’s my favorite math in general, too. I find it fascinating and fun to teach.

What is the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you in class?

A student tried to get me to hold her pet snake. I said no.

Why did she have her pet snake in class?

Good question.

What is the most interesting place you’ve visited?

New Zealand.

What is your favorite color?

Midnight Blue, the color of sky at dusk

What is your favorite genre of music? Favorite musician?

Indie/Alternative/Psychedelic. My favorite band in concert is Arcade Fire, and my favorite band to listen to on my own is Animal Collective.

Beyonce or Tay-Tay?

Lorde.

Do you consider yourself a hipster? What is the most modern thing about you?

That term is too mainstream for me. I don’t have cable or a landline, and I never plan to.

Most obscure item on your bucket list?

Crowd-surfing.

If you could meet anybody in the world, alive or dead, who would it be?

The founders of all major religious groups. I would want to talk to them all at once, to see how they would interact with one another, where they can agree and disagree, what they have in common, what wisdom they have to share what their life experiences were. I’d find all of that to be fascinating.

Coolest thing about your job?

My students, and still being fascinated by math. Even after teaching the same stuff every year, I still find stuff that fascinates me.

Do you have any complaints about the job?

I am happy just to be here. I can understand some student complaints, but as a teacher (a young teacher especially)  I am grateful to be in such an amazing district.

Favorite book you’ve read? Favorite movie?

House of Leaves for favorite book, and for favorite movie I have to go with Labyrinth (David Bowie is in it). Tied with that, though, I would have to go with Princess Mononoke. 

What is your worst fear?

Losing a loved one.

Who is your idol?

Gandalf, because of his wisdom and foresight.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I consume every part of the apple. Every part.
